The river where you set your foot just now is gone -- those waters giving way to this, now this.Heraclitus, 6th Century BC
The astonishments framed in Heraclitus’ famous tasting note are not more rewardingly experienced than in revisiting previous vintages of Octagon. The reason could not be more plain, but its verification also could not be more thrilling.
Octagon is composed of several very distinct wines, chosen from the most select lots of the red Bordeaux harvest -- in Octagon VII, there are 5 distinguishable clones of Cabernet Franc, our most precious Merlot, the renowned “337” clone of Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Every one of these facets evolved on the vine with its own agenda and its own date of harvest; every one of them will emerge in bottle in its own trajectory -- always in sympathy with its peers, but always portraying a new rapport with them, and with the palate, as the kaleidoscopic beauty of this wine overshadows its last tasting, and sparks anticipation for its next, with the warmest illumination of the present.
For this reason, we open our wine library twice annually at Barrel Tasting weekends, affording opportunities to reconstitute collections of our finest previous vintages.
